U.S. housing construction jumps 7% in March

The estimate was for only 933,000 or a 1.7% increase.  Results were boosted by a 27% increase in multifamily homes, or homes with at least five units.  Single family housing declined by 4.8%.  The number of housing starts rose to 1.04 million, the strongest since June of 2008.  February's number were revised sharply upward to 968,000 starts.  However, new building permits fell by 3.9% to 902,000 in March and significantly below the 945,000 estimate.
